A Primer on the "Mortgage Crisis" Pt 1

The Obamians and their accomplisses in the press who shill for them have blasted John McCain in recent days over his statement that the economy is sound. Politically, it wasn't the best move as such statements become fodder for the uncritical sound bite crowd. But fundementally john mccain is right. Unemployment is low, although it has risen in the last month, inflation is moderating, corporate earnings and GDP remain positive. For going through the biggest terrorist attack in history, a war, and now the biggest financial crisis, the bush economy is doing remarkably well. But then again, if bush isn't going to defend his record, why should anyone else. So the problem is not with the economy, but with the credit markets which john q public doesn't see on the evening news.

When mr public goes down to main street bank and gets a mortgage, the bank sells his mortgage to the countrywides of the world. They inturn get their money back plus some money for doing the loan so they can make another loan next month. There is too much risk for the bank to not sell. Now that countrywide has bought this loan, they don't want it either because of the risk, so they sell it to Fannie Mae. Part of the deal is that countrywide will continue to collect the payments and manage the escrow account, but the actual loan itself gets trucked off to Fannie and the client is none the wiser. Now fannie mae doesn't want to hold the loan either, because its too risky so they take a bunch of loans they bought and drop them on the door step of wall street. Wall Street in turn securitizes all these loans into bonds to sell them to mutual funds, insurance companies, pension funds, hedge funds and individual investors. What this effectively does is spread the risk of my mortgage and your mortgage to a bunch of different investors. And this is how the conforming mortgage market works. All loans that conform to fannie mae and freddie mac guidelines follow this path.

Back in the late 90's when interest rates were very low there was a bunch of money sloshing around the economy, housing was a great investment and congress was intent upon providing more opportunities to low income and minority borrowers. Ergo, lending guidelines gradually relaxed their standards. We got the now infamous no doc loans, stated income loans and no money down loans. The subprime mortgage market got extremely hot and investors from banks to hedge funds to insurance companies started loading up their books with these mortgage bonds. This brought a tsunami of new home buyers into the market and drove housing prices up even higher and all was right with the world. Lenders and investors were fat and happy and congress had a narrative to tell their constituents about how they have expanded housing opportunities.

When the economy started to slow, investors woke up one day and realized, wait, we have risk in our portfolios and if housing prices are not going to go up 20% this year, we need to scale back buying all these subprime loans. Within a few months, investors stopped buying these loans and the whole subprime market collapsed and some lenders had to close their doors. Now all of these financial institutions still have A LOT of these subprime bonds on their books, there is no market to sell them and nobody knows what they are worth. The Bear Sterns, Lehman Brothers and AIG's of the world don't have the assets to cover writing all these bonds off as a loss, so they either go under or they need to be bailed out. And in the case of Bear and AIG, the economic ramifications of letting them go under are just too dire of an option.

The plan put forward by hank paulson this week will have the government stepping in as a buyer of these mortgage bonds when nobody else will. They will offer institutions 30 or 40 cents on the dollar for their illiquid mortgage bonds. Once the economy gets back on its feet and the street gets a better idea of default rates the Treasury will then be selling these bonds back to investors hopefully for more than what they paid for them. The Treasury is not so much bailing out wall street, but stepping in as a buyer of last resort to provide a market for this debt where there currently isn't one. Paulsen comes from Goldman Sachs and is a superb dealmaker. There is a fire sale right now on mortgage bonds and this could prove to be a terrific investment 5 years from now.

Personal Responsibility

Before I start writing this post, I want to admit that I’m not all that well versed on the subject of financial services.  I took an Economics class in college and hear cursory things about it at work, but I will admit that I’m not an expert.  However, on the current housing situation, I feel I must opine.  I’m not even going to dwell on the fact that the recently passed housing bill cost taxpayers over $300 billion in order to bail out people who have no sense of personal responsibility, bought a $500,000 with a $30,000 income and now wonder why they can’t afford their payments.  No, I’m not going to complain about that.  What I will complain about, though, is all the whining I’m hearing about the elimination of down payment assistance programs.  The previously mentioned housing bill contained a provision that eliminated seller-financed down payment assistance (DPA) programs.  If you’re unfamiliar with DPA, it’s a program that provides buyers with the money for a down payment on a house if they can’t afford one themselves.  When passing the housing bill, the federal government decided to eliminate the program because it has been undeniably shown that people who use the program are way more likely to default on their mortgages.  But now people are whining because some Americans can’t afford to buy a house without DPA.  Well, I’m here to say tough crap, people.  Simply put, not everyone in America can afford to buy a house.  A house is not a right.  Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that the federal government should overreach its enumerated powers in order to make sure that every American can buy a house.  What the Constitution DOES promise is life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness.  Let me say that again… the PURSUIT of happiness.  That means that the federal government will never hold you back from achieving your dreams, but at the same time, cannot guarantee that you’ll have amenity you desire in life.  Put another way, if you really want a home of your own, the federal government will never hold you back from maybe getting a second job or living on a tighter budget than usual for a year or two so you can save up some money for a down payment.  That’s the responsible way to do it, and more Americans need to grow up and realize this.

Wake up people… and especially U.S. Rep. Barney Frank… my generation is sick of watching our tab increase because of the all the luxuries you’re providing to a spoiled culture that feels entitled to everything under the sun.  Stop straddling us with debt!!!

The hypocrisy of the left example #284.....

The left and the media have been apaplectic over the Patriot Act provision that allows the governement to surveil communications made from this country to other countries. We have been regailed with implications of goverment spying over the last few years, but to date i have yet to hear of any instances of the governement spying on americans. Nothing, nada, zilch. Now, irony of ironies, these same stalwarts of privacy, these defenders of civil liberties have hacked into and made public the governor of alaska's email account.

Oink Oink

A new report by the Citizens Against Government Waste shows that John McCain strongly resists earmarks, while Barack Obama and Joe Biden rank among some of the worst members of the Senate when it comes to wasteful spending.  The group has analyzed roll call votes since 1991 to distinguish members of Congress whom it describes as taxpayer advocates from those it says favor wasteful programs and pork-barrel spending.  Members of Congress are ranked from 0 to 100 percent.  A score close to 100 percent means they resist wasteful spending, while a score close to 0 percent means the member loves pork and wasting tax dollars.

So here are the scores:

John McCain - 100% (representing no earmarks)
Barack Obama - 10%
Joe Biden - 0% (representing a real pig)

Now, when you consider those numbers, who really represents change from the norm in Washington?

Advice to John McCain

The obama campaign is in a meltdown right now and the lipstick comment just poured gas on the fire. If John McCain starts referring to himself as the "old fish" in his stump speeches it would be precious not to mention send the press over the top. I think i actually felt chris matthews spit on me watching hardball tonight.

My Latest Epiphany

I was watching football with some friends this afternoon, and during a commercial break, we started discussing the upcoming presidential election.  Friend A asked Friend B if he liked Sarah Palin, to which Friend B vehemently replied, 'no, I hate her.'  He was so bitter, one would think Palin had killed his dog or something.  Knowing Friend B is completely void of any political knowledge, I asked him what specific policy stance of Palin's he didn't like.  Of course, as expected, he had no answer.

This, my friends, is why we have such a partisan, do-nothing political system... the American voter does not have to be the least bit informed in order to cast a ballot, he simply has to know how to hate.

If our system is based on hate, we have no hope with any candidate.  Period.

McCain vs Obama on Russia

In DesMoines, McCain said, concerning the Russian agression in Georgia, "The news reports indicate that the Russian military forces crossed an internationally recognized border into the sovereign territory of Georgia. Russia should immediately and unconditionally cease its military operations and withdraw all forces from sovereign Georgian territory."

Obama's statement, " "I strongly condemn the outbreak of violence in Georgia, and urge an immediate end to armed conflict. Now is the time for Georgia and Russia to show restraint, and to avoid an escalation to full scale war. Georgia's territorial integrity must be respected. All sides should enter into direct talks on behalf of stability in Georgia, and the United States, the United Nations Security Council and the international community should fully support a peaceful resolution to this crisis."

If this isn't enough evidence to keep the adults in the white house, I am not sure what is.

Increasing supply won't decrease the price of oil????/

Since our president announced the lifting of the executive ban on offshore drilling, a largely symbolic gesture by the way, a mere two days ago, oil prices are down almost 10%.

The greatest story in the war on terror never told

The London Sunday Times has reported that the once 12k strong al queda operatives in Iraq have been reduced to a mere 1,200 terrorists with their backs against the wall in northern mosul. By far the biggest military victory in the war on terror has somehow escaped the american press. Consequently, General Patraeus is drawing bigger crowds in Iraq than angelina jolie.

Handguns in DC

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court decided 5-4 that the District of Columbia’s 32-year-old ban on handguns in residents’ homes is unconstitutional. Basing my opinion on a 4th grade civics lesson, I say, ‘good.’ We all learned way back when that the Bill of Rights was created to protect the rights of the people—not states or militias. Period. So, there shouldn’t be so much confusion about whether the amendment was intended only to authorize states to arm members of their militias. In 1787, the amendments were created in order to ease the people’s fear that if the new national Constitution was ratified, their basic rights would not be infringed upon by the central government. I’m glad the Court finally decided to begin a revival of the Second Amendment’s original intent.

If Congress can do for oil, what it has done for corn....

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 mandated that 7.5 billion gallons of gas come from ethanol by 2012. Harry Reid's '07 Consumer Protection and Energy Efficiency Act of 2007 bumps this number to 36 billion by 2022. The theory is that this would ease some of the demand on gasoline and bring prices down. Higher ethanol demand has not only failed to bring down gas prices, which are up 60% since September '07,  but have pushed corn prices up over 300%. This has caused everything from cereal to tortillas to skyrocket in price.

When talking about the failed energy policies of the past, perhaps the good senator from Illionois should reexamine his '05 vote and his support of ethanol.

One dimensional thinking in a three dimensional world

One question I wished more people would ask, especially in the political arena, is 'so what?'  Drilling in ANWR could conceivably compromise the pristine natural beauty of 1,500 of the 19 million acres that make up ANWR.  So what?  The greatest source for good in the world is the United States and a few unscrupulous dictator thugs consider us the great satan for being so.  So what?  Another worthy question that deserves equal distinction is 'so what's?' second cousin, 'and then what?'  The high courts recent habeas corpus decision has given detainees at Guantanamo or any enemy combatant for that matter the right to petition the court on the legality of their detention.  The passions of the left usually consist of the most celestial of motives, but the 'and then what?' often comes with unintended consequences.  Detainees will now have to be given access to classified informatation.  Information that will find its way to the wrong people with deadly consequences.  Our military will become international process servers tracking down and giving subpoenas to witnesses to appear before the court.  How will a US subpoenas work is Mosul?  Military officers and soldiers will now have to schedule court appearances as witnesses.  Now that our enemies have new found constitutional rights, our men and women on the front lines should seriously think about lawyering up before that next mission.

Politics as Usual

According to the New York Times:

“Citing the specter of attacks from independent groups on the right, Senator Barack Obama announced Thursday that he would opt out of the public financing system for the general election.”

Backing out of earlier pledges? Does that sound like a proponent of “change” or a typical politician? Obama’s campaign has done such an incredible job of duping the American public into believing that he’s above Washington politics, that people are forgetting that this man is in fact a politician (and a very sly one at that). His actions in recent weeks have made that clear.

So, his decision to break an earlier pledge was apparently caused by unexpected attacks from his opposition… Hmmm… What does he expect the White House to be like? I’ve never been president, but I’d bet that there are lots of unexpected problems coming at you from all angles when you’re residing in the White House. So, even though he has promised “change” in his administration, is he going to break this promise every time something unexpected happens? If that’s the case, there’s going to be quite a lot of broken promises in the Obama White House.  And that’s going to leave Americans even more cynical toward Washington than they already are.

Funny thing is, if Obama actually had the experience he should have to run for the highest office of the land, he might have seen these attacks coming; then he wouldn’t have had to break his pledge. But the whole “experience” thing in politics is overrated and undesirable, right? Wrong. Like it or not, things wouldn’t get done in Washington without seasoned veterans making things happen. Anyone who has ever studied or worked in government can tell you that. The workings of the American government are complicated. Go figure!

Bottom line: No matter how hard Barack Obama tries to convince otherwise, he is your typical sly politician. Let’s not treat him like he’s anything else.

Wasting Time

This past week, I’ve noticed a significant amount of time on the House floor being devoted to ridiculous subject matter...  And we have the Democratic leadership to thank.  In lieu of scheduling floor time to address the high prices Americans are facing at the gas pumps and grocery stores, they have instead used the floor to discuss monkey bites, National Men’s Fitness Week, and post office names.  It’s probably all for the best, though; when trying to solve America’s pressing problems in the past, Democrats continually catered to extremists, giving us policies directly responsible for the high gas prices of today.  But rest assured, my fellow Americans, if you’re a simian, buff male, or postal enthusiast, Democrats are at least doing something for you; the rest of us, however, are screwed.
